PhonePe Acquires Indus Appstore, Takes on Google Play

In a definitive step toward technological sovereignty, PhonePe has acquired the Indus Appstore to provide a localized, fair alternative to the Google-Apple app duopoly in India.

PhonePe, India’s most successful UPI payments platform with over 500 million users, has completed the strategic acquisition of Indus Appstore. While the deal amount remains undisclosed, industry estimates peg the transaction at over $80 million. This move is not just a business acquisition; it is a declaration of war against the global gatekeepers of the mobile ecosystem.

Breaking the Duopoly

For years, Indian developers have voiced concerns over the strict policies and high commissions (ranging from 15% to 30%) charged by Google and Apple for in-app purchases. By launching its own app store, PhonePe aims to create a “for India, by India” distribution channel.

The Value Proposition for Developers

  • Zero Commission: No platform fees for the first year of listing.
  • Local Discovery: AI-driven algorithms tailored specifically for Indian user habits.
  • Multilingual Support: The store is accessible in 12 major Indian languages, targeting the “next billion” users who are not comfortable with English-centric interfaces.
  • Alternative Payments: Seamless integration with multiple UPI providers, not just Google Pay or Apple Pay.

Strategic Timing

The acquisition comes at a time when the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has been increasingly critical of Google’s dominance. The startup ecosystem, led by the Alliance of Digital India Foundation (ADIF), has been advocating for a level playing field.

“The Indus Appstore is about giving developers a choice,” said Sameer Nigam, Founder and CEO of PhonePe. “India is the world’s largest downloader of apps, yet we have no say in how these apps are distributed or monetized. We are going to change that.”

The Indus Advantage: Native Features

Indus Appstore offers features that are notably absent or limited on the Play Store:

  1. Language Localization: Complete end-to-end experience in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, and more.
  2. Simplified Login: Phone number-based authentication, which is far more prevalent in India than email-based sign-ins.
  3. Ad-Free Discovery: A focus on editorial curation rather than “pay-to-play” search results in the initial phase.

Ecosystem Reaction

The Indian startup community has reacted with overwhelming positivity.

  • Vijay Shekhar Sharma (Paytm): “This is a big win for Indian tech sovereignty.”
  • Nithin Kamath (Zerodha): Suggested that native app stores could help reduce customer acquisition costs for fintech startups.
  • Gaming Startups: Numerous mobile gaming studios have expressed interest in moving their primary distribución to Indus to avoid high revenue sharing.

The Road Ahead: Pre-loading on Handsets

The biggest challenge for any new app store is distribution. PhonePe is already in talks with several Indian and global smartphone manufacturers (OEMs) like Micromax, Lava, and Nokia to have the Indus Appstore pre-installed on devices at the factory level.

If PhonePe can successfully leverage its existing 500 million user base to drive traffic to the Indus Appstore, it could fundamentally redraw the map of India’s digital economy, making it more resilient and inclusive.
